Scourge is a ZDoom wad, and my first wad to be released. Currently it is in version 1.2. It contains maps that are over 2 years old in some cases, which is why most of the maps are not particularly astounding from an architectural viewpoint.
The wad itself features 23 levels (21, a secret and a cast-call) that steadily improve in mapping skill as the level number increases. When I was just starting map 18 I got Doombuilder. That program was a lifesaver after my previous editor, a very limited version of DEU2, which didn't actually feature all of the flats and had a small level size limit. Levels like level 13 were actually cut short due to the size limitations I was faced with. However, you can see the best effect of Doombuilder in map 31, which makes the best use of ZDooms capabilities as a level. The CREDMAP features scripting, but only functions as a cast-call. All of the levels are best played from a pistol start, though I have set up a form of continuity and a vague storyline to help the wad along a little, so I advise a compromise, in which you play the levels in order, just from a pistol start every time. Extra additions to the wad, aside from the levels are new level name graphics for each of the levels edited, a MAPINFO lump, some Decorate monsters (though only one to play against), a INTERPIC and a TITLEPIC. Nothing particularly difficult or exciting, though it offers enough challanges for me to struggle in some places. The difficulty levels are implemented, but they don't have much effect in some levels. |
